Avon Things To Do: Ghosts, Barbecue, and More

by Bryan Johnson on August 11, 2009

Downtown Avon, IndianaAvon, Indiana, a small satellite community just to the west of Indiana state capital Indianapolis, has a larger amount of things to do than you might expect. The town is, of course, on the outskirts of one of the best places to hang out in the Midwest, but it also brings a lot of its own events, attractions, and things to do to the table. Avon things to do can be fun for the entire family, so if you’d like a lazy weekend away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Indianapolis, Avon might be just the place for you.

A vendor at the Hendricks County Rib Fest in Avon, IndianaTo start with, there are several Avon events that might just make a short trip to this little hamlet worth your while. The Hendricks County Rib Fest, founded in 2005, is a finger lickin’ good time in which Avon residents showcase their culinary prowess. Held in Washington Township Community Park, one of the larger Avon parks, this event pulls in over 10,000 visitors to Avon from all around Central Indiana and is one of the largest rib fests in the region. Avon hotels are packed during the summer with visitors who want to experience some of the best barbecue in the state, and the Hendricks County Rib Fest never fails to exceed everyone’s expectations.

A good place to bring Avon children, the Avon Community Heritage Festival is a jam packed weekend full of games, exhibits, and cool Avon things to do. The Avon American Legion holds a town dinner every year during this Indianapolis festival, and the festivities include a talent show for aspiring Indianapolis performing arts stars, thrilling fireworks, a parade through downtown Avon, and more. The Avon Community Heritage Festival is yet another unique thing to do in Avon.

The Haunted Bridge in Avon, IndianaIf scares are more your thing, then Avon has one of the most notorious haunted places in Indiana: the Avon Haunted Bridge. This bridge, located about half a mile south of U.S. 36, is the source of dozens of tales of ghosts, specters, shades, and whispers in the dark. Formerly a crossroads for the Big Four Railroad, the bridge is now fallen into disuse, causing all sorts of ghoulies to come out and relive the glory days of their lives. Stories about the bridge range from drunken accidents that proved fatal to bodies used as caulking and foundation within the bridge’s structure; whatever the true story is, a visit during the witching hour to the haunted bridge is one of the creepiest things to do in Avon.

Fine private dining room at Charbono's Restaurant in Avon, IndianaAfter a heart racing encounter at the Avon Haunted Bridge, you may find yourself in the mood to relax and take part in a slightly less adrenaline fueled event. That’s great, because one of the most popular things to do in Avon is to visit one of the many fine Avon restaurants. Avon has all sorts of eateries, from the original square pizza pie at Pizza King to the ethnic delicacies of Thai One On and the Mediterranean Grill. Two of the best Avon restaurants are Charbono’s Fine Italian Dining and Monical’s Pizza. Charbono’s is a deliciously rustic experience straight from the heart of Italy, with traditional Italian dishes served piping hot and with a lot of love. Monical’s is a popular pizza chain that has locations throughout Central Indiana, including Lafayette.

Fair-goers in costume at the Community Heritage Festival in AvonSo if you think Avon is without things to do, you obviously haven’t seen enough of the town. Though it may pale in comparison to the constant goings on of the Indianapolis nightlife scene in any of the six Indianapolis cultural districts, Avon has a lot to do for people with families and people that would just like to take it easy. Sample some award winning barbecue at the Hendricks County Rib Fest, watch the fireworks at the Avon Community Heritage Festival, feel your spine tingle at the Avon Haunted Bridge, or sate your hunger for the best fare at an Avon restaurant: either way you go, you’re sure to find plenty of things to do in Avon.
