Located in the Washington Township Community Park, an Avon park that’s a favorite gathering place for families and friends, this special annual event takes place every summer. The very first Hendricks County Rib Fest drew upwards of 5,000 people. These days, with the population of Avon swelling fast, it is estimated that 10,000 visitors might attend the Rib Fest in 2009.

This is an Indianapolis festival with a twist. It offers wonderful live entertainment and other activities that are fun for Avon kids and adults alike, including a big fireworks display to cap it off. But what’s unique about this particular summer event is the food.

The Hendricks County Rib Fest is actually a huge contest to choose who makes the best ribs and the best BBQ sauce. There is fierce competition to participate, and each vendor has to fill out a form and be approved for booth space, which goes for $150 for the event. Bragging rights for the winner, however, are worth gold; any Avon restaurant would be proud to call the award-winning ribs home. The winners are chosen by a panel of judges and votes from the general population.

You can get a two-bone sample from the Longhorn Steakhouse, for example, for only $3. Or how about their spiced apples for $1 or some beer brats for only $3 from Boulder Creek/Stone Creek? Delia’s serves up a quarter chicken for $5 and you can add baked beans for a buck.
