Arts and Culture in Avon: Small Town, Serious Art

Avon, Indiana is a charming suburb of Indianapolis. Despite its small size, art and culture are still very much in evidence in Avon, though residents take full advantage of everything Indy has to offer. Avon art is, however, well represented locally. There are three hobby stores, Michael’s, Bates Art & Design Supplies and the Hobby Lobby, offering just about everything imaginable for the creative.

Two hometown artists who are hitting their stride in the art world are Shannon Thomas and Gerald Botzum. Gerald Botzum paints a little bit of everything in his inimitable expressionistic style, such as the beautiful landscape, “Handsome Reserve”, pictured above. Shannon Thomas sticks to digital paintings and impressionistic and abstract paintings, such as “Blacky”, the darkly colorful piece to the right.

Every year, an Indianapolis fair that’s extremely popular with everyone in Central Indiana takes place about 30 minutes from Avon: the Talbot Street Art Fair. Only about five minutes away in Plainfield is the Sketch Pad Art , which exhibits original works by Indianapolis artists and also offers Indianapolis art classes and art camp sessions.

Avon art fans also benefit from the nearby art and collectibles exhibits at the Artistic Design Gallery in Brownsburg, as well as two famous Indianapolis art museums: the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Eiteljorg Museum, only a few miles away.

It’s clear that Avon kids and adults alike can experience great works of art, interactive lessons, and displays of beauty any time they like.
