I can’t think of a more all-American food than a hot dog. They’re inexpensive, easy to eat on the go and generally taste pretty good.

But I want something better…Let’s talk about where you can find a really good hot dog in Avon.

A hot dog so tasty that you can’t wait to go back and order another one.

DJ’s Hot Dog Co. is a locally owned and operated restaurant in the heart of Avon (there are other locations in Indy). DJ’s is a casual eatery, where you order and pay at the counter. On a recent Saturday afternoon, it was packed with families. (What kid doesn’t like a hot dog?).

I decided to order two hot dogs, a Chicago Dog ($3.79) for me and a New York Dog ($3.29) for my friend.

The service was friendly and very efficient. The hot dogs were ready within a few minutes. We decided to eat these on the go, because it was a beautiful day in Avon.I loved my Chicago Dog, with all of the authentic toppings, like neon relish and sport peppers.

I ordered the Chicago Dog (mustard, onion, neon relish, tomato, kosher spear, cucumber, sport peppers and a dash of celery salt)- kind of like a salad on a hot dog.

The poppy seed bun was fresh and the hot dog was excellent. They know how to make a Chicago Dog and it shows. DJ’s uses fresh buns and 100% all beef hot dogs.

My friend enjoyed the New York Dog with sauerkraut and spicy mustard.

There are several options of city dogs and I’ll have to try the Indy Dog, with ketchup, mustard, relish and tomato). I’m not a fan of ketchup on a hot dog, so I’ll get it without it.

If you’re hungrier, you can pay a dollar more for a jumbo hot dog and if you want a different bun (besides plain or poppy seed), a pretzel bun is available for 79 cents more.

DJ’s has a large menu with lots of hot dog options, hamburgers and sides, like french fries and onion rings. Did I mention the Big City Specialties such as the Chicago Style Italian Beef or the Walking Taco? There are so many choices and I’m getting hungry, so it’s time that I head to DJ’s Hot Dog Co. and you should too!
