Larry Dixon: Top Fuel Champion from Avon, Indiana

Aside from basketball, racing is the most celebrated sport in Hoosier country. The home of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and countless other race tracks, big and small, Indiana loves speed. Therefore, it’s unsurprising that a number of famous Indiana people are affiliated with a racing community, whether it’s NASCAR, midget cars, or drag racing. One such racing celebrity is Avon, Indiana resident Larry Dixon. Dixon, the son of professional drag racer Larry Dixon Sr., has won countless events in Indianapolis and beyond, and his career is far from over.

Larry Dixon got his start in the world of high speed racing with the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) in 1988, when he was a lowly pit worker for Don “The Snake” Prudhomme. He earned his Top Fuel license in 1994 and became a rookie in the circuit in 1995; he won $100,000 at the Budweiser Shootout in Indianapolis on his way to becoming Rookie of the Year for 1995. He won a few more Budweiser Shootouts in the next five years in addition to winning Pomona 1 in 1998. Despite his promising beginnings, Larry Dixon really didn’t hit his own stride until the start of the 21st century.

In 2000, he won six events out of his nine final round appearances, finishing in the top 10 of the Powerade point standings (for the seventh straight season). 2000 was also the second year he won the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park. 2002 brought top flight status to Larry Dixon: he earned his first NHRA championship that year and tied the single season record for Top Fuel racers. He won the NHRA championship again in 2003, becoming only the fifth driver to win consecutive championships in Top Fuel history.

Far from finished with his career, Larry Dixon will likely make many more headlines as a Top Fuel racer. He currently lives in Avon with his wife and three children, and by the end of 2009 he had racked up a massive 537 round wins. Now a member of the Al-Anabi racing team, Larry Dixon is still a competitive racer who has more than earned his stripes. Though he’s not the only high speed entry in the list of famous Avon people, Larry Dixon has proven to be a popular Avon son, especially in the high octane world of Indianapolis sports.
